The urothelium is a unique, highly specialized epithelium lining the lower urinary tract. It has a variable number of cell layers, but in the rodent urinary bladder it is usually three cell layers thick in the urinary bladder and more in the ureter.

2020-02-20 Bladder urothelial stem cells, although their exact location was unknown, were presumed to reside in the basal layer of the epithelium. Indeed, our preliminary data with nucleotide‐label retention support this presumption (Kurzrock et al. 2005a). These urothelial cells have enlarged nuclei, with slightly higher N/C ratio and a small nucleolus (26, 27, 28). Some authors have suggested the presence of cells with a nucleolated globular body and variable slender cytoplasm as suggestive of low-grade papillary urothelial carcinoma (35, 36). Transitional cell carcinoma, also called urothelial carcinoma, is a type of cancer that typically occurs in the urinary system.

Urothelial cell displays irregular nuclear contours. (b)Group of urothelial cells with markedly irregular nuclear contours and variation in nuclear size (lower left). In comparison to the neighboring squamous cells there is mild nuclear hyperchromasia. Urothelial carcinoma is a type of cancer that starts from the cells that line the inside of the bladder, ureters, and urethra. The spread of tumour cells into the muscle of the bladder wall is an important feature that will impact the treatment you receive.

Papillary tumors are thin, finger-like growths that start in the bladder In summary, we generally consider the urothelial cells in voided specimens as atypical when they exhibit a nuclear/cytoplasmic (N/C) ratio exceeding 50%. A carcinoma that arises from the proximal tubular cells of the kidney.

3 Nov 2009 The epithelium lining the bladder (a.k.a. “the urothelium”) is one of the the plasma membrane of superficial umbrella cells of the urothelium. Tumour infiltrating B cells and CD38+ plasma cells have been correlated with survival in different malignancies but their role in urinary bladder cancer is unclear.

Diagnostic classification of urothelial cells in urine cytology specimens using exclusively spectral information The results of the current study demonstrate that spectral information, in the complete absence of morphologic or spatial information, allows discrimination of benign and malignant urothelial cells in routine urine cytology specimens.

Urothelial cells

Urine cytology is a test to look for abnormal cells in your urine. It's used with other tests and procedures to diagnose urinary tract cancers, most often bladder cancer. Your doctor might recommend a urine cytology test if you have blood in your urine (hematuria). Clusters of Benign Urothelial Cells. Image A. Image B. When evaluating a urinary cytology specimen, one of the first aspects that need to be established is the means Bladder cancer most often begins in the cells (urothelial cells) that line the inside of your bladder. Urothelial cells are also found in your kidneys and the tubes (ureters) that connect the kidneys to the bladder.

It begins in urothelial cells, which line the inside of the bladder and other parts of the urinary tract. These cells overgrow and form a tumor. This type of cancer occurs most often in the bladder, but can occur anywhere that urothelial cells are present, including the urethra, ureters and kidneys. Diagnostic classification of urothelial cells in urine cytology specimens using exclusively spectral information The results of the current study demonstrate that spectral information, in the complete absence of morphologic or spatial information, allows discrimination of benign and malignant urothelial cells in routine urine cytology specimens. Bladder and other urothelial cancers are diseases in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the urothelium.
